Boston Post Road

The Boston Post Road is one of the oldest in the country, connecting the cities of New York and Boston -- think of it as one of the first interstate highways in existence. In 1763, Deputy Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin placed around 230 mile markers on the road. These markers were renumbered circa 1800 and the Jay mansion happens to be lined up with #24 -- 24 miles, that is, from New York City. However, the original Boston Post Road lies just behind this wall as does a Broad Axe mark carved in stone by the British to distinguish what trees were the property of the Crown.

The Jay Heritage Center is proud to be a part of the Boston Post Road Historic District along with 4 other properties - Lounsbury, Whitby Castle and Rye Golf Club, the Jay Cemetery and Marshlands Conservancy.
