Devereux Cottage, 1957-8

Atop a knoll called Cherry Hill, this building is located on the planned site of the Welcome Pavilion and was constructed in 1957-8 by the Devereux Family when they owned the Estate. However, this building was built on the site of an earlier cottage that dates back to the Jay era -- 1849. The original was based on designs by Alexander Jackson Davis (the same architect who designed Whitby Castle further up on Boston Post Road) and closely resembles another one of his structures, Station no. 10 of the New York Yacht Club. The present cottage will eventually be demolished due to a prevalence of asbestos and mold, which render it unusable.

The original, Alexander Jackson Davis-styled cottage.

Station 10 of the New York Yacht Club, the inspiration for the original cottage.

A possible pavilion.
