Palmer Tennis House, 1916

This phenomenal structure was commissioned by Edgar Palmer and and his wife Zilph Hayes. Built in 1916, this tennis house is among the oldest of its kind in the United States. It was used almost continuously until the 1990s, when it fell into severe disrepair.

Major damage from Hurricane Sandy compounded the threat of its collapse and so in 2015, JHC launched an emergency effort to restore the roof with an eye towards eventually making this place a functional tennis house once more. JHC applied for and was the recipient of a $397,056 FEMA grant thanks to a compelling application and many letters of community support including a letter from the USTA. JHC successfully completed this grant in the summer of July 2020. Work on the Tennis House was completed by Apple Restoration and Waterproofing with design assistance from Stephen Tilly Architects. JHC is currently looking for donors to help complete this project. It is estimated that an additional $1 - 1.5 million investment can make the court playable for community use. Please contact our Executive Director Kevin Peraino at peraino.jhc@gmail.com for more info about how to help!
